RICHARD GERKIN; SON OF JEREMIAH? BROTHER OF FREDERICK? JS Bailey Oct 1994 Born between 1776 and 1780. Earlier? Died after 1823. He may have been a cooper or barrel maker.

1802. Beaufort County. Thomas Wallis deeded 100 acres land to Richard Gurkin. On S side of Ropers Swamp beginning at a pine on the N county road Jesse Rowland corner on the Ready Branch then with his line on Coleman Woolards line to the back line on or near Levi Stubbs line to the corner a pine then with the line of Walter Jones patent on the upper corner of them to the beginning of the patent on Jones line and then with the Jesse Rowland line to the beginning. Levi Stubbs bought his land from John Armistead in 1801.

In 1795 Jeremiah Gurkin sold 100 acres land to William Osborn. In 1825 the Thomas Wallis, who sold the above deed to Richard Gurkin, left land William Osbern sold him to his son Starkey Wallis. Thomas Wallis's sons Starkey and Charles subsequently witness deeds for William Gurkin, son of Frederick, and even make gifts to Horace Gurkin, son of William.

June 1810 Beaufort County Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions held at courthouse, Washington, NC. Ordered that Francis Lee, a boy aged 13 years or thereabouts, be bound an apprentice to Richard Gerkin to learn the trade of a cooper until lawful age. [Microfilm C.009.30002, Bft Ct Minutes 1809-14]

In 1795 Appleton Squires was a witness when Jeremiah Gurkin sold land to William Osborn.

1846 June 14. Malachi Ange [grandson of Jeremiah Waters] to Hoyt N Waters for $20, land Walter Jones corner, Lazarus Swamp to Levi Stubbs line...Richard Gurkins. Wit: James Daniel and Mary Daniel. [Bft DB 24, 304] In Jeremiah Waters' will he said he had gotten this land from William Boyd.
