JOSHUA GERKIN; SON OF JOSHUA AND ANN GERKIN BORN CIRCA 1758? DIED BY OCTOBER 1795 TYRRELL COUNTY COURT NO KNOWN DESCENDANTS

Joshua Gerkin (II) first appears as a witness in a 1786 will. It is difficult to know what age he might have been. He is also listed in the 1790 census. He could have been as young as 16 at that point though that seems unlikely.

1786 May 6. Thomas McDowell will. Probate Oct Term 1786 Son Frederick, wife Mary 4 children Thomas, James, Simeon, Nancey. Execs: Friends Joshua Leary and Robert Davison. Wit: Thomas Miller, Joshua Guerkin. [Bradley, Tyrrell Wills, #232]

May 23, 1788 Steward Hambelton, for love and £3, gave Margaret Simmons of Tyrrell all my land I live on and household goods after my decease. Wit: William Harrison, Joseph Harrison. [Tyr DB 10, p 339-40, #237]

Oct 27, 1789 Margaret gave this land to John Hambleton, administrator of Steward Hambleton, dec'd for £3. The witnesses were Ed Blount, Joshua Guerkins. It was proved in April Term 1790 by the oath of Edmund Blount. [Tyr DB 10, p 438,]

1790 September 13. Amos Warters to William Warters, £30, 195 acres land on a ridge in Long Acre known by the name of Piney Ridge joining to the Chinquepin Ridge beginning at a pine of his own line. Amos X Warters. Wit: Jonathan Jones, Jeremiah Warters, Joshua Gurkin. Dec. Term 1790 by oath of Jonathan Jones. Alderson Ellison, Chief Justice. Dec 20, 1793. John Hassell of Tyr for £90 to Joshua Leary. 40 acres land in Tyr Co in Fork of Scuppernong River beg at a chincapin tree then S 50 W 10 chains then continuing along the swamp 6 1/2 chains to a Beach then 12 chains to a poplar then binding upon Robert Davis's line running N the various courses of the Branch to the River Pocoson. October 1795 Tyrrell Court. Ordered that John Gurkin have leave to administer on the estate of Joshua Gurkin Dec'd and give bond & security in the sum of £100. James Freeman & Uriah Phelps his Securities. John Gurkin returned the inventory of Joshua Gurkin. Filed. John Gurkin to sell perishable part of estate of Joshua Gurkin dec'd amounting to £38:18:0. The estate papers of Joshua Gurkin from the North Carolina Archives indicate that John Gurkin was held accountable for a debt of £13:06:11 owed to Rebecca Hassell concerning the estate of Joshua Gurkin.
