Gurkin Burial Sites

Although many other burial sites exist, only the sites that I thought would be appropriate for the purpose of this Web Site are shown here.

Although the Burial sites of the Early Gurkins are not known (to the Site Sponsor), it is presumed they were buried on or near the location they lived. Zachery (Gerkin) Jerkin is probably buried near Conaby Creek just northeast of Plymouth, NC, and his son Zachariah buried on or near the 60 acres he owned called "The Gurkin Plantation",  also just northeast of Plymouth, NC. His son Joshua is probably buried on the141 acres deeded to him on Davises Island. I have not been able to locate this property, or the burial sites of Joshua or any of his descendants, with the exception of some of his son Jeremiah's Pinetown descendants (not documented as his descendants).  I do not know where Zachariah's son Zachariah might have lived and died. Grandson Zachariah is probably the Revolutionary War Pensioner described elsewhere at this site and is buried in Florida.

                        Cemetery of  Benjamin Gurkin   b abt 1725 - d 1800

Zachariah's son Benjamin is buried on his property in Beaufort County, near the Washington County line. When Benjamin moved to that location, Long Ridge Road at that time was located east of the present location. When the road was moved to it's present location, his property was isolated, with no road frontage, and has since been vacated . There is no evidence at this time that anyone ever lived there. About 50 years ago Milton Gurkin took my brother Edward Gurkin hunting on that property and showed him the graveyard where Benjamin is buried, but when we attempted to find it in 1998, too much time had passed. We could not find the exact location of the property, or the graveyard.

Benjamin's son Zachariah married Sarah Mizzel and moved to Williams Township near Jamesville, NC. I do not know their place of burial ,but his son, Zachariah Taylor Gurkin's cemetery, is described below:

Cemetery of  Zachariah Taylor Gurkin   9/12/1825 - 10/3/1927

Located about eight miles south of Williamston, NC, off Highway 17, on State Road 1516 (Fire Department Road). This is a fairly large, well kept cemetery, on the left side of the road, easily seen just beside the road.

Buried there are: Zachariah Taylor Gurkin    9/12/1855 - 10/3/1927
                          Cynthia Della Manning Gurkin    5/19/1857 - 11/20/1960

This cemetery is located on Highway 64, at it's intersection with SR 1563, Grey Farm Rd., across the road from SR 1563 in the edge of the woods. When I saw it, the wooden picket fence around it was about gone and the woods were about to take it over. (I have since been told that Luther Warren Gurkin and Harry Willoughby Gurkin have  partially restored the cemetery).

Buried there are: Henry A. Gurkin    1839 - 1885
